I’m a 50-something life-long foodie who works from home as a freelancer/author/podcaster. I live with my husband of 20 years and our black Lab, Bodhi — about an hour from Chicago in the part of Indiana that has sand dunes and beaches as well as plentiful parks and forested natural spaces.
We are also lucky to have some great local farms and other non-traditional places I buy food that provide the backdrop for a lot of my food adventures.
Besides those local resources, I also periodically use some services like Imperfect Foods that ship cosmetically inferior produce (and now other types of food, too). I came to rely on this pretty heavily during covid lockdown in 2020 and now use it only when other sources aren’t my best option. I also grow some of our food on our .18 acre yard, incorporating some front yard garden beds and some permaculture methods and fruit trees in the back.
To feed my adventurous side and my love of nature, I enjoy finding and using wild foods like mushrooms, ramps, berries and edible flowers when the weather and my schedule permits. I don’t trust the cleanliness of our local lakes so I don’t fish near home but on vacations to more pristine locales I have eaten what I’ve caught.
